There has been an increase in the number of senior couples who have taken on raising their grandchildren. There are many factors that contribute to the biological parents not being able to care for their children such as drug addiction, incarceration, and sadly the death of a parent or parents.
For some seniors this can create a financial hardship during their retirement years. Other times the grandparents are already struggling to make ends meet but can’t say “no” when approached by a state agency regarding taking in the grandchildren.
There is an experimental, federally funded housing program in Smithville, Tn. that looks to meet the needs of the growing number of active seniors raising their grandchildren. This program is the only one of it’s kind in the nation that was established for this purpose.
This article written by Tony Gonzalez of The Tennessean explains more about this remarkable program and how it has kept one struggling family together.
